Puck picks for November 4-10

Philadelphia Flyers @ Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens are the surprise of this early NHL season, rocketing off to a 9-3 start.
The November 4th Canadiens-Flyers odds are pretty tight, with the Habs getting the -158 moneyline to Philly’s +129.
Where you might find an edge is in live betting. Especially in overtime, or even if the game is tied late. The Canadiens are lethal in OT, with a team built for the 3-on-3 format. Caufield, Hutson, Suzuki, Demidov and puck-moving d-men like Matheson and Dobson make them almost impossible to contain for the full five minutes of overtime. They’re a perfect 5-0 in the extra period games this season.
The Canadiens keep it close too. Nine of their last 10 games have been decided by a single goal. If you’re a regression-betting type, you know that won’t last. With the league’s #2 ppg at 3.67 goals, a breakout game could happen any day now. That +116 for the Over 3.5 total goals by Montreal looks tempting.

Boston Bruins @ New York Islanders
Eighteen-year-old Matthew Schaefer should be in high school, gearing up for his prom in a few months.
Instead, the Isles’ D-man is already the odds-on Calder Cup favorite for 2025-26 and a team leader. And at +140 to pick up at least one assist in this game, Schaef’s a solid player prop bet too. The rookie is drawing all the attention in the country’s biggest hockey market for good reason. But the Bruins-Islanders odds rely on more than just one teenager. David Pastrnak already has 17 points on the season, and the Bruins just took down the Islanders easily a week ago, 5-2.
At +138 on the moneyline, Boston could be a solid pick as they look to extend their 3-game win streak.
Utah Mammoth @ Toronto Maple Leafs
Fresh off a stunning 4-goal comeback against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Leafs are looking to take that game to kickstart their season.
Still one of the top 5 (ok, top 10 at least) most talent-laden rosters in the NHL, Toronto is third in a tightly packed Atlantic. But they’re just two points out of 8th place too.
NHL betting fans looking for an edge on Wednesday night might like the Leafs here just because of the travel grind.
Utah, after their big 7-game winning streak, has lost 2 in a row and they’ll be playing a back-to-back in Toronto right after a tough one against the Sabres. That grind includes travel to Edmonton, back home against the Lightning, and back on the road to Buffalo before hitting a Toronto team that might be finding its legs.
Washington Capitals @ Pittsburgh
Does Ovechkin vs. Crosby ever get old?
Not for us. The two greybeards (ok, Sid can’t really grow one if we’re being honest) are still getting it done at an elite level in the NHL. But Ovie is showing signs of slowing down faster than Crosby is. The Caps’ legend only has 7 points through 12 games, while Crosby has 17 in 14 and is leading the team in goals.
Further slowing down Ovechkin this week is the back-to-back issue. The Capitals are hosting the Blues and 24 hours later they’ll be hitting the ice against a strong Pens squad that’s sitting 1st in the Metropolitan Division. Not an ideal scenario for any team, but especially for a player who turned 40 two months ago.
The X factor here is the lights-out goaltending of Washington goalie Logan Thompson. He leads the league with a 1.51 GAA and be a shutdown netminder in any game. He hasn’t let in more than two goals in any game so far this season.
We don’t suggest Crosby and Malkin & Co. will be kept completely quiet, but keep that Under in mind when hitting the bet slips for this one.
Colorado Avalanche @ Edmonton Oilers
Saturday night. MacKinnon vs McDavid. Both are Hart Trophy winners (McDavid three times, MacKinnon once) and both can turn a game around in a second. For early season NHL action, it doesn’t get much better.
This season, it’s the Avs that have the decided edge. They’ve been at or near the top of the NHL standings since opening night, while Edmonton isn’t looking like a team that has made the past two Stanley Cup Finals. They even helped St. Louis to their first W in seven games with a weak showing earlier this week.
The X factor here which could make the home ‘dog Oilers a solid play is the potential return of
Zach Hyman. Keep an eye out on injury reports for the possible season debut of the guy that the Oilers call their emotional leader (and a top linemate for McDavid and Draisaitl). Coaches are saying their November 8th game might be the one. His presence in a charged-up home arena on Saturday night against the league’s best might lead Edmonton to a SU win or at least help them keep it close.
Chicago Blackhawks @ Detroit Red Wings
An Original Six afternoon matchup on a Sunday afternoon? We’re in.
Chicago’s Connor Bedard just racked up his first career hat trick last week and is starting to look like the player we thought he’d become. While it’s not translating into as many wins for the Windy City as hockey fans might like, he’s a real threat every time he’s on the ice.
The Red Wings, meanwhile, are up there with the Canadiens for surprise of the season so far. For a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2016, Detroit’s not looking to give up their first place status in the Atlantic anytime soon.
And they’re doing it all without a true #1 goalie. The Wings are only 20th in the NHL in goaltending this year. With the ‘Hawks net also pretty leaky, take a close look at the Over. And add in the fact that Chicago can score in bunches, with a 7-goal and an 8-goal game in the win column already this season.
