Florida vs. Miami and UConn-Michigan headline a brand new season of betting on college hoops
College basketball is back for the opening week of the 2026-27 season and they’re not waiting till March to get to the good stuff.
The Florida vs. Miami opening night game is the headliner, along with Arizona vs. UCLA and a national championship rematch involving UConn and Michigan later this week.
There are 183 games on Monday night. Nuts. That includes 20 preseason AP Top 25 teams taking the floor. Betting on NCAAB? It’ll be tough to not go ham on dozens of games, but take it slow.
For NCAA basketball betting fans, the same story repeats here just like it does for every sport: Early-season hoops means limited data on every player and every team. The oddsmakers are running the same playbook you are. That means NCAAB odds are based mainly on last year’s team and this year’s expectations.
Florida vs. Miami: The No. 1 Team Gets Tested on Opening Night
Florida opens against No. 14 Miami on Monday night.
The Gators enter as the preseason No. 1 team for the first time since 2006, 20 years ago. The expectations built around Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu are high, especially when you’ve got UConn and a half-dozen other teams that look just as strong as last season. Florida is looking for its second national championship in three seasons though. They can handle the pressure.
For Miami, Malik Reneau is back after averaging 18.9 points last season, while Georgia transfer Somto Cyril gives the ‘Canes an interior presence that could push the Gators’ bigs. Miami also picked up more quality and depth via the portal, with Villanova transfer Acaden Lewis running the offense.
Florida is favored by fewer than two simple 3’s – not a huge endorsement that a #1 would usually get to kick off a season.
Miami has enough size to make this competitive. Factor in the opening few games of any season, where even the best teams are still finding their rhythm and coaches are still playing with their rotations.
If you like an upset pick to start the season, might as well go for the top dog in the country. Florida is only going to get stronger as they sort out their rotation and find their groove, so this time of year is as good as any to grab a plus-money number against them. Miami +200 could be the move.
Arizona vs. UCLA: Talent Meets Tempo in Las Vegas
No. 5 Arizona faces No. 22 UCLA in Vegas. That immediately takes away home court for either team.
The Wildcats are coming off a 36-win season and Final Four appearance, with freshman shooting guard Caleb Holt joining returning Motiejus Krivas and Ivan Kharchenkov. Holt was the #2 high school recruit in the entire country, so this could be trouble for the Bruins and the rest of the college basketball world.
Krivas enters the season as the Big 12’s preseason player of the year, giving Arizona A-list talent inside while Holt adds the same on the perimeter.
UCLA can’t match Arizona possession for possession. They added Texas Tech transfer Jaylen Petty and Serbian freshman Nikola Kusturica, but neither is a game-breaker (yet). The Bruins’ don’t want to get into matching Arizona possession for possession. They need to control the pace, limit easy transition opportunities and make the Wildcats execute against a set defense.
With Holt expected to make an impact right away (he went for 21 pts and 5 rebounds in their most recent preseason game), we’re a little surprised that a #5 is only laying 4.5 against a #22.
Live betting NCAAB could be the way to go. Watch this game early. If the Wildcats can create their preferred running game, they’ll deserve to be bigger favorites. If it looks like the game is turning into a tight, half-court battle, that favors UCLA keeping it close.
UConn-Michigan
Friday night brings No. 4 UConn against No. 16 Michigan. It’s a rematch of last season’s national championship game, but both teams have slipped in the early rankings after each had a busy offseason losing key starters.
Still, this one will have the feel of the biggest game of opening week. HBO and TNT coverage, Friday night, plus two serious programs that aren’t happy about the preseason downgrade.
The Wolverines beat the Huskies 69-63 in last April’s national championship game, but this rematch comes with a different look. Michigan has a new coach in Mike Boynton, which always means an adjustment that hoops bettors and oddsmakers are wary of. Returning guards Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney are back but the summer saw too many players leaving. Even worse, freshman Brandon McCoy Jr. just suffered an ACL injury in September.
UConn brings back its own pair of vets, Silas Demary and Braylon Mullins with deep playoff experience. Having a returning backcourt is huge, especially with the stability it brings to start the year. Coach Dan Hurley is back too, with the 2023 and 2024 national championships and a Coach of the Year award in his pocket.
UConn added Duke transfer Nik Khamenia too. He’s already showed up for preseason, with 39 points and 25 boards in three games.
Overall, this could turn into an early season statement for the Huskies. Expect a big win and look at alternative spreads that take the spread higher than the posted number when it comes out.
