Boston Bruins vs Montreal Canadiens is the greatest rivalry in American sport. A hockey game, not a football game, and that is the first surprise this study turns up.
Rivalries are what turn ordinary games into appointment viewing. Generations of family loyalty. Playoff scars that never healed. Decades of bad blood between neighboring cities.
But which one is actually the biggest?
To answer that, Lucky Rebel analyzed 18 rivalries across the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB and NCAA. Opinion was left out of it. Each rivalry was scored on three factors:
- Competitive balance, or how evenly matched the two teams have been
- Historic significance, or the rivalry’s place in the sport’s story
- Fan interest, measured on US search demand
Those three combine into a weighted score out of 100. The higher the score, the bigger the rivalry.
Some legendary matchups held their ground. Others have quietly been overtaken by names you hear far less often.
Key Findings
- Bruins vs Canadiens is America’s highest-ranked sports rivalry, scoring 71.2 out of 100.
- The NHL claims the No.1 rivalry despite the NFL’s larger audiences.
- Boston franchises appear in six of the 18 rivalries, more than any other city.
- Packers vs Bears generates the greatest online interest of any rivalry analyzed.
- Yankees vs Red Sox remains baseball’s strongest rivalry at sixth overall.
- Basketball places three rivalries inside the overall top eight.
- The biggest rivalries combine history, competitiveness and sustained interest. Popularity alone does not get you there.

The NHL Is Home to America’s Greatest Rivalry
The NFL owns television. The NBA owns the rest of the world. Hockey still takes the top spot.
Boston Bruins vs Montreal Canadiens scores 71.2, the highest of any rivalry in the study. It posts 87.6 for competitive balance and 88.6 for historic significance. Nothing else comes close on both at once.
The matchup goes back more than a century. Two Original Six franchises, countless playoff meetings, and a list of moments that shaped the sport.
The Bruins also take tenth with Toronto. No other franchise places two rivalries that high.
Basketball Produces Three of America’s Top Eight Rivalries
The NBA crowds the top of the board.
Boston Celtics vs Philadelphia 76ers edges Celtics against Lakers by two tenths of a point, 70.7 to 70.5. The 76ers rivalry wins it on balance, scoring 80.5 against 74.1. Celtics against Lakers is the more famous fixture and it takes the higher mark for history at 89.4.
Knicks against Pacers sits eighth. Long stretches without a postseason meeting, and it still holds. Playoff memory carries a rivalry a long way.
Football Does Not Have the Best Rivalry, but It Has the Most Popular
Measure by attention and the NFL stands alone.
Packers vs Bears posts 67.5 for fan interest, the highest single figure in the study. Cowboys vs Eagles takes fifth overall. Steelers vs Ravens is seventh and remains the meanest fixture on the modern calendar.
Hockey and basketball score better on history. Football still wins the room.
Baseball’s Historic Giants Still Stand Up
Audiences changed. The old baseball rivalries did not.
Yankees vs Red Sox ranks sixth at 61.8, with 82.0 for historic significance. Dodgers vs Giants takes ninth. Both have survived franchise moves, expansion and several generations of players.
All three MLB rivalries in the study finish inside the top 12. No other league can say that.
The Most Overrated Rivalries
Some rivalries pull enormous attention and score poorly anyway. Big fanbases, heavy media coverage, and not enough balance or history underneath.
| Rank | Rivalry | League | Overall rank | Overall score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Michigan Wolverines vs Ohio State Buckeyes | NCAA | 17 | 50.2 |
| 2 | Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears | NFL | 4 | 66.3 |
| 3 | Dallas Cowboys vs Philadelphia Eagles | NFL | 5 | 63.7 |
| 4 | New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox | MLB | 6 | 61.8 |
| 5 | Boston Celtics vs Los Angeles Lakers | NBA | 3 | 70.5 |
| 6 | Boston Celtics vs Philadelphia 76ers | NBA | 2 | 70.7 |
| 7 | Boston Bruins vs Montreal Canadiens | NHL | 1 | 71.2 |
| 8 | Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens | NFL | 7 | 59.3 |
| 9 | Miami Heat vs Boston Celtics | NBA | 13 | 54.0 |
| 10 | New England Patriots vs New York Jets | NFL | 16 | 51.4 |
Michigan vs Ohio State is the clearest case. Enormous national attention, seventeenth of eighteen on the index.
Note what this list does not mean. Bruins vs Canadiens is on it and still ranks first overall. A rivalry can draw more attention than its numbers justify and remain the best in the country. Popularity is not the same as quality.
The Most Underrated Rivalries
Now the other direction. These have stayed fiercely competitive for decades and get a fraction of the national coverage.
| Rank | Rivalry | League | Overall rank | Fan interest | Overall score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pittsburgh Penguins vs Philadelphia Flyers | NHL | 15 | 54.2 | 52.6 |
| 2 | San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks | NFL | 14 | 55.8 | 53.2 |
| 3 | Chicago Blackhawks vs Detroit Red Wings | NHL | 11 | 57.5 | 56.7 |
| 4 | St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs | MLB | 12 | 58.3 | 55.1 |
| 5 | Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants | MLB | 9 | 59.2 | 58.5 |
| 6 | Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens | NFL | 7 | 58.9 | 59.3 |
| 7 | Boston Bruins vs Toronto Maple Leafs | NHL | 10 | 58.9 | 57.8 |
| 8 | New England Patriots vs New York Jets | NFL | 16 | 57.7 | 51.4 |
| 9 | Miami Heat vs Boston Celtics | NBA | 13 | 58.8 | 54.0 |
| 10 | Los Angeles Lakers vs Miami Heat | NBA | 18 | 54.5 | 49.8 |
Penguins vs Flyers leads it. Blackhawks vs Red Wings is third and one of the most storied fixtures in hockey.
These are the games casual fans skip. They should not.
Which League Has the Strongest Rivalries?
Step back from individual matchups and the leagues separate out.
| League | Rivalries in study | Best rank | Average final score | Average fan interest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NBA | 5 | 2 | 60.7 | 61.1 |
| NHL | 4 | 1 | 59.6 | 58.7 |
| NFL | 5 | 4 | 58.8 | 60.5 |
| MLB | 3 | 6 | 58.5 | 59.6 |
| NCAA | 1 | 17 | 50.2 | 53.7 |
The NHL takes the single biggest rivalry in the country. Smaller divisions, more frequent meetings and long franchise histories keep hockey rivalries sharp across generations.
The NBA takes the strongest average at 60.7 and puts five rivalries on the board, level with the NFL. The NFL takes the highest single fan interest score. MLB brings the oldest fixtures and lands all three inside the top 12.
Four leagues, four different claims. None of them owns the whole argument.
Which Cities Are Home to the Fiercest Rivalries?
Boston. It is not close.
Boston franchises appear in six of the 18 rivalries analyzed. The Bruins take first and tenth. The Celtics take second, third and thirteenth. The Red Sox take sixth.
Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles and Montreal all appear more than once. None of them appears six times.
What Actually Makes a Great Sports Rivalry?
Three things separated the top of the index from the rest.
1. History Matters
Every rivalry in the top 10 scores at least 71.4 for historic significance. Generational familiarity builds a grudge that newer fixtures have not had time to earn.
2. Close Competition Keeps Fans Invested
The strongest rivalries are not one-sided. The top two both score above 80 for competitive balance. When neither team dominates for long, you get uncertainty, and uncertainty is what people come back for.
3. Fans Keep the Rivalry Alive
History alone is not enough. The highest-ranked rivalries still pull audiences, searches and arguments today.
The best of them connect the past to the present. That is the whole trick.
Methodology
Lucky Rebel ranked 18 prominent sports rivalries across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and NCAA.
Each rivalry received a weighted final score built from three components:
- Competitive balance: how evenly matched the rivalry has been over time, rewarding matchups where neither team has consistently dominated.
- Historic significance: the rivalry’s importance, longevity and contribution to the league’s story, with playoff and championship meetings weighted by importance.
- Fan interest: monthly US Google search volume for each rivalry, log-normalized so the largest markets do not distort the rankings.
These three metrics combine into a single weighted final score out of 100. The higher the score, the bigger the rivalry.
