Deep dive into the marquee Ohio State-Texas matchup, with spread, total, player props and matchup-specific betting angles

College Football Week 2 is where things get slightly more normal, after a Week 1 that saw epic blowouts for the big favorites.

The Ohio State-Texas odds will show up with much tighter lines already, although it is still just college football Week 2 betting we’re talking here. That means the books still have a lot of variables that can mess up their models, with not enough data on the season to cover all their bases.

That’s where the sharps find their edge like the always do in CFB picks: chaos.

The Buckeyes are still the #1 seed in the country unless something drastic happens when the new AP poll comes out. They’ve had that badge since well before the NCAA football season kicked off, and a 56-3 hammering of Ball State last weekend didn’t change their forecast for the coming year of elite ball expected of them.

What can you take away from that demolition of Ball State? OSU’s offense looked like they were in mid-season shape, racking up 671 yards. QB Julian Sayin delivered a statement with 320 yards plus a rushing TD of his own. We don’t need to dive that deep into that cupcake matchup though. The Longhorns are in a different league.

Texas held the #1 spot over a year ago when these two powerhouses met, and it was OSU pulling off the upset 14-7. This year the Texas-OSU spread is hovering between 1.0 and 1.5, a coin flip basically, with the ‘Horns laying the points because of home field advantage.

The NCAA transfer portal makes any season-to-season comparisons tougher, with new faces entering the picture overnight. The biggest concern for OSU could be the integration of their new transfers on D. They lost elite NFL-caliber players that held Texas to just 7 points last season, guys like Arvell Reese, Sonny Styles, and Caleb Downs. You don’t lose the 5th, 7th, and 11th overall NFL picks and expect the same defense.

That could open up some solid picks like taking the Over with the 48.5 O/U. The casual public bettor might look at the high total and auto-bet based on last year’s special defense, but that unit was a unicorn. Add to that the fact that Sayin is now a junior – that’s the time that elite QBs separate themselves. Could mean more points on the board, as he and Jeremiah Smith (a wide receiver in the running for the Heisman) are one of the best QB-WR combos in all of college football.

Texas

Arch Manning’s 2026 campaign will be his second as a full-time starter for the Longhorns. After going through the SEC meat grinder last season, and especially after a rough outing in that 14-7 loss to OSU (where he completed just 56% of his passes), Manning is an A-lister again.

He’s not the golden child anymore though. He can be beat. OSU brought in transfers like Qua Russaw, Beau Atkinson and James Smith to replace the NFL exports they lost, but they may not be able to pressure him into just one touchdown and a sub-60 completion rate again.

Like Sayin last weekend, Manning put up a fat number on a small opponent in a 59-7 win over Texas State. He got good reps in but that Buckeyes defense is also in another league. Don’t expect 59 this weekend but do expect more than seven. Manning has Ryan Wingo back of course, but he also picked up more talent with transfers Cam Coleman and Emmett Mosley V to throw to.

Part of Texas’ shot at a win here over the country’s #1 team is their upgraded O-line. Transfers came in to give it a boost and that also applies to the run game, with ASU’s Raleek Brown and NC State’s Hollywood Smothers looking to make noise and get into national championship contention.

Part of the reason this game is sitting at just 1.5-point spread is the defensive losses that the ‘Horns suffered. The secondary that held OSU to just 14 points in last year’s game lost Malik Muhammad and Michael Taafe to the pros. It’s another reason that 48.5 Texas-Ohio State total is so high and could be an Over bet. Secondaries need to find their rhythm and can get picked apart early in the season.

Strangely enough, even after all the transfer portal moves on both sides and with two starting QBs that are in the NCAAF futures conversation to take home the Heisman Trophy (Manning is second at +1000, Sayin is at +1400), the biggest deciding factor in this one could on the sidelines.

Ohio State brought in former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as OC. NCAA football betting fans might like Smith’s pro-style touch more than anything between these two evenly matched teams on the field. Smith’s background includes a strong Tennessee Titans’ offense that featured a ton of Derrick Henry and plenty of play-action. Pro experience rarely hurts any college program, and that might be enough to tip the scales to OSU’s side this Saturday.
