Nurmagomedov vs Song is one of the bigger fights of the summer
UFC Fight Night hits Shanghai on August 29th and the main names are familiar to anyone who knows their way around UFC fight card odds.
The bantamweight main event between Umar Nurmagomedov and hometown fighter Song Yadong would be a main or co-main at a bigger UFC event. UFC Fight Night predictions by the books are almost unanimously backing the Russian. Song has the speed and finishing power that can make UFC betting fans think twice though. Either way, it’s a great contrast in styles fight where you need to dig deeper to uncover the UFC August 2026 best bets.
Nurmagomedov vs. Song: Fighter Profiles
This is a proper contender fight. You normally see these at a numbered UFC event, not a random Friday in August.
Umar Nurmagomedov comes in at 20-1 overall and 7-1 in the UFC, while Song Yadong is 23-9-1 overall with a 12-4-1 UFC record. It’s a five-round main event in Shanghai, which means Song will have the building behind him. Whether you believe in home-country momentum or thinks it’s overrated is a coin flip.
Fact is, Nurmagomedov is the more complete fighter. He’s #3 in the division compared to Song at #6. He’s also got his more famous cousin’s DNA, which probably helps. Nurmagomedov is a rangy, mobile southpaw who can kick from distance, change stances, wrestle in open space, clinch, you name it.
He gets into opponents’ heads because he forces them to think about multiple things at once. He can change his look a number of times over 25 minutes. If Song reads the jab, Umar can kick. If Song starts loading up, Umar can head for the mat. If Song defends the first takedown, Nurmagomedov keeps coming.
How to Find the Edge in the Underdog
The cleanest edge is to make a bet on this one going long. Only one of Song’s last 5 fights has not ended in a decision, a submission in his last fight against Figueiredo. Song also took Suga Sean the distance in his most recent loss back in January.
The basic case for Song is that he’s the sharper boxer compared to Nurmagomedov, with the more dangerous one-shot offense. That’s the only thing that might get you to pump the brakes on a bet to have this one going the distance. Song is quick enough to close distance before opponents settle. He’s dangerous enough to make top wrestlers careful on their entries.
The upset route, even at a pretty hefty +375, is plausible. On paper. Just deny the Nurmagomedov takedowns early and stay off the fence. Easy right? Also, force Nurmagomedov to operate under pressure. Bring the fight to him so he can’t operate at his preferred pace. Back to that home crowd energy – if you think Song will channel it and can also execute the above strengths, that’s a live ‘dog at that price.
Still, the matchup leans Umar because he has some many ways to break through Song’s defense. Nurmagomedov can win minutes in multiple ways, without taking major risks.
The data also leans Nurmagomedov. He’s landed 4.0 takedowns per 15 minutes with nearly 5.8 minutes of control time per 15. That dwarfs Song’s 0.8 takedowns and 2.0 minutes of control.
Method of Victory Props Worth a Look
Nurmagomedov by decision is the most obvious prop angle. Song is hard to put away – look at all those recent decisions. He’s athletic enough to scramble out of ugly positions and his fighting shape is at its peak right now. This will be his third time in the Octagon this year.
It’s not an auto-bet on the favorite to win by decision though. Nurmagomedov does have the tools to finish earlier, especially if he gets Song into longer wrestling exchanges starting the first round.
The most interesting alternative bet is Nurmagomedov by submission at a bigger number. Grinding Song down before the full 25 is an outside shot but it’s Nurmagomedov’s biggest strength. If he takes the back during a scramble, a submission bet turns live pretty quickly.
For Song bettors – and there will be a lot of them – Song by KO/TKO is the only method-of-victory angle that really makes sense. The decision loss against O’Malley made sense, with Suga much more likely to stand up and trade instead of winning on the ground. But that ground game advantage for Umar is too much to ignore. A knockout prop for Song though – that fits his main edge. Hand speed, power, and his ability to punish an entry or catch Umar during a kicking exchange.
Round Total: Expect a Long Fight
The over 4.5 rounds at around -135 isn’t the flashiest number, but it’s the most practical one for the books. It’s not cheap but you could fit into a parlay.
Nurmagomedov is likely going to try to establish a measured, process-driven fight instead of a shootout like Song would prefer. Then again, strategy-wise, he might come out firing just to surprise Song’s corner. Worth a small play for a bigger plus-money bet? Overall though, Song is tough enough and good enough defensively to make a one-sided early finish less likely.
The over also benefits from some incentives outside of the Octagon. Neither fighter can short-change this fight just because it’s not a bigger event. Nurmagomedov is trying to stay near the top of a loaded bantamweight division after coming up short in his title bid. Song is fighting in front of a home crowd with a major opportunity to break through into the true title picture. For those reasons each fighter might be less willing to take a risk in the early rounds.
A number that won’t be huge but should still pay is the combo bet of Nurmagomedov to win and over 2.5 rounds. It gives you exposure to his path of control-heavy fighting and wrestling, without needing you to commit to all 25 minutes.
