Two matches. Two days. Four nations. By Wednesday night on July 15, two of those four are in the World Cup final. Two are heading to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens to play for bronze, the match itself nobody wanted, the medal that still counts.

Match 101 plays at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Tuesday, July 14. Match 102 plays at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15. The two stadiums could not be more different. AT&T seats 80,000 with a retractable roof and the largest scoreboard in American sport. Mercedes-Benz seats 75,000 under a kinetic roof that opens like a camera shutter. Different cathedrals. Same prize.

The semi-final is football’s most tactically anxious match. Coaches stop thinking about how to win and start thinking about how not to lose. Teams that have spent the tournament playing front-foot pull their lines back. The conservatism is rational. There is no recovery from a semi-final loss except the bronze game, and nobody plays for bronze when they came here for gold.

History remembers the semi-final winners. It also remembers the heartbreaks. Croatia coming back from 1-0 down to England in 2018. Argentina edging the Netherlands on penalties in 2014. Belgium and France in 2018, the second semi that decided the title before the Final played a minute. This round writes the bracket’s last big plot twists. The two winners advance to the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday 19 July. The two losers play for bronze at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday 18 July.
