Indianapolis is running it back. Shane Steichen, Chris Ballard and Daniel Jones all return for 2026. That is the plan, and the plan rests almost entirely on one surgically repaired Achilles tendon.
Before the injury, Jones was one of the best stories in the league. The Colts started 8-2, Jones was in the MVP conversation, and Steichen’s offense looked solved. Then Jones tore his Achilles in Week 14 and the season went with it. Whether 2026 works comes down to whether he returns the same.

Our call: they miss it. At +160 to make the playoffs and -215 to miss, the market is not buying the bounce-back, and the reason is the Achilles. A quarterback coming off that injury, in a division with a steady Houston and a 13-win Jacksonville, is a real question. The Colts also lost Michael Pittman Jr. from the receiver room. If Jones is right, this number looks low. If he is not, the market is right.
Steichen, Ballard and a quiet offseason at the top
The Colts kept their core trio. Shane Steichen returns as head coach, Chris Ballard as general manager, and Daniel Jones as the named starter. After years of quarterback churn, Indianapolis chose continuity, betting Jones’s career year under Steichen was real and repeatable.
It is not a pure run-it-back, though. The roster turned over at the edges, on the offensive line and in the front seven. The faces at the top stayed the same. The supporting cast did not entirely.
Jim Bob Cooter, Lou Anarumo and the staff
Jim Bob Cooter runs the offense as coordinator, with Steichen’s play-design the lift that drove Jones’s numbers. The scheme is the reason Indianapolis was comfortable committing to Jones on a two-year deal.
Lou Anarumo returns for a second season as defensive coordinator, and his unit is the quiet strength of this team. In 2025 the Colts forced takeaways at a top-of-the-league rate and ranked among the best run defenses in football. Adding All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner only raised the floor.
The Colts playing staff
Jonathan Taylor anchors the run game, and Steichen will lean on it hard while Jones finds his legs. The receiver room lost Michael Pittman Jr., leaving Josh Downs, Alec Pierce and tight end Tyler Warren to carry the load.
The defense is the more reliable side. Laiatu Latu and DeForest Buckner set the front, and Sauce Gardner headlines a secondary that should travel. If the offense holds while Jones ramps up, this roster can stay in the race.
