Pittsburgh Steelers
Odds
Next game odds, playoff outlook, schedule and Super Bowl history.
Pittsburgh turned the page on an era. Mike Tomlin stepped down after nineteen seasons, ending one of the longest tenures in the league, and the Steelers replaced him with hometown native Mike McCarthy. For a franchise that has had four head coaches since 1969, this is seismic.
McCarthy brings a Super Bowl ring and decades of offensive experience, and he will call the plays. The roster he inherits has talent but also the same question that has dogged Pittsburgh for years. Who plays quarterback. That answer will define 2026.
Lucky Rebel’s Editor Top Pick
The quarterback situation is the whole thing. Aaron Rodgers, who started in 2025, has an uncertain future, and McCarthy’s developmental hope is Will Howard, a 2025 sixth-round pick with almost no game experience. Pittsburgh has not drafted and developed a franchise passer since Ben Roethlisberger. McCarthy was hired in part because he is regarded as a quarterback developer. That project is the season.

| Pittsburgh Steelers to make the playoffs | +155 | -210 |
Our call: they miss it. At +155 to make the playoffs and -210 to miss, the market is skeptical of a team breaking in a new head coach, a new staff and an unsettled quarterback room all at once. McCarthy reuniting with Rodgers could recapture something, but counting on that is a leap. Pittsburgh has the defense to stay competitive, yet the offense and the quarterback question point toward a transition year.
Mike McCarthy replaces Mike Tomlin
Tomlin stepped down the day after the 2025 season ended, closing a nineteen-year run without a losing season. McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, takes over after thirteen years in Green Bay, where he won a Super Bowl, and five in Dallas. He is only the fourth Steelers head coach since 1969.
The whole structure has changed. McCarthy brought in a new staff, kept only a couple of holdovers, and added modern roles the franchise had gone without. He will call the offense himself and lean on the West Coast principles that built his career.
Brian Angelichio, Patrick Graham and the staff
Brian Angelichio is the new offensive coordinator after four years coordinating the passing game in Minnesota, though McCarthy holds the play sheet. The offense will be built to serve the quarterback and run the football, in McCarthy’s words.
Patrick Graham takes over the defense, arriving from the Raiders to run a unit that has long been Pittsburgh’s identity. General manager Omar Khan has the pieces on that side. Graham’s job is to keep the defense among the league’s best while the offense finds itself.
The Steelers playing staff
The defense remains the backbone, the side McCarthy and Graham can lean on while the offense settles. That has been the Pittsburgh formula for two decades and it does not change in year one of a new staff.
The offense is the question. Whether Aaron Rodgers returns or Will Howard steps in, the quarterback spot carries the season. Pittsburgh needs to finally develop a long-term answer there, and McCarthy was hired to deliver it. Until that is settled, the ceiling is capped.
