Detroit Lions
Playoff History
Next game odds, season schedule, playoff path, Super Bowl history.
For thirty-two years the Lions could not win a playoff game. Three decades. A whole generation of fans grew up never once seeing their team win in January, which is a specific and lonely kind of fandom that I understand better than most. Then, after the 2023 season, it finally broke, and the relief in that building could be felt through a television.
The long, long drought
Detroit’s last championship came in 1957, before the Super Bowl existed, and they have never reached one. The decades since were mostly January absence punctuated by the odd one-and-done, the playoff-win drought stretching to thirty-two years, the longest of its kind in the league. They were, for a long time, the definition of waiting.
The rise, and the cruelty of it
Then it turned. They won that drought-breaker, reached the NFC Championship Game after the 2023 season, and led the 49ers by seventeen at halftime before it all came apart in the second half. The next year they went 15-2 and a sensational season ended in a stunning home divisional loss. This past season they missed the dance entirely. The rise was real. So was the heartbreak that came with it.
A 1957 title nobody remembers, thirty-two years without a January win, and a recent run that finally ended the wait and then found new ways to wound. Lions fans, you and I are cut from the same cloth, the long wait and the cruel finish. You broke your drought. Mine broke too. There is hope in that, even when it does not feel like it.
