Super Bowl History
Next game odds, season schedule, playoff path, Super Bowl history.
Joe Namath guaranteed it. Three days before Super Bowl III, January 1969, with his Jets eighteen-point underdogs to the mighty Baltimore Colts, Namath stood at a banquet and said his team would win. Then they did, 16-7, and the upset did not just win a game. It legitimized an entire league, the AFL, and changed how everyone thought about the merger. Namath jogged off the field with one finger raised. Number one.
One trip, one trophy, and a long quiet since
It is the only Super Bowl the Jets have ever reached, and the guarantee makes it one of the most famous games ever played. The trouble is the calendar since. That was January 1969. The Jets have not been back to a Super Bowl in over half a century, the longest active drought of its kind. One shining appearance, one trophy, and then decades of the door staying shut.
The strange shape of it
Most franchises would kill for a Super Bowl win that mattered to the whole sport. The Jets have exactly that, and then nothing for fifty-plus years. Jets fans, you own one of the landmark games in NFL history and a wait that has outlasted the careers of everyone who played in it. From four-time losers to one-time legends, every fandom carries something heavy. Yours is the gap.
