San Francisco 49ers
Playoff History
Next game odds, season schedule, playoff path, Super Bowl history.
Montana rolled right, threw it high to the back of the end zone, and Dwight Clark went up and got it. The Catch. January 1982, the NFC Championship Game, the play that beat Dallas and launched the most elegant dynasty the sport has known. Everything the 49ers became in January started with one impossibly high throw to a leaping receiver. I have watched it a hundred times and it still looks like a magic trick.
The dynasty, and the modern contender
San Francisco’s January history is gold-plated. Five Super Bowl titles across the Montana and Young years, a decade and a half of postseason dominance built on offense nobody could solve. The modern 49ers under Kyle Shanahan have been a fixture too, reaching multiple Super Bowls and a stack of NFC Championship Games, including a furious comeback win over the Lions after the 2023 season.
The recent near-misses and a short run
The trouble has been the final step. The modern team has lost Super Bowls it led and title games it should have won. This past January was a shorter story, a wild-card win over the Eagles followed by a 41-6 dismantling at Seattle in the divisional round. A quick exit for a franchise used to going further.
Five trophies, the most famous catch in playoff history, and a modern team still chasing the sixth. 49ers fans, your January pedigree is as good as it gets, which makes the recent near-misses ache in a way that long-suffering teams would envy. The Catch started it all. The next trophy has been the hard part.
